Six months is the honest test. It is long enough to live through a wet season, find your doctor and your bakery, learn the roads, and feel what the distance from family really costs, and short enough to keep your home, your pension arrangements and your exit intact. Retirees increasingly test overseas living this way rather than selling up first, and Bali is one of the most common places to do it. Rent a whole furnished home on a monthly agreement, come in the northern winter, and decide in month five.
Why six months and not six weeks
Six weeks is a holiday. It shows you the island at its best and hides the parts that decide whether you can live here: the rainy months, the traffic on the day you need the clinic, how you feel on the third Sunday without the grandchildren. Six months puts all of that in front of you while your life at home is paused rather than dismantled.
It is also the length your paperwork supports without a long-term permit. Practitioners report that multiple-entry visit visas allow 60 days per entry, extendable in-country twice, which is roughly 180 days. Test on that, and only then decide whether a retirement stay permit is worth applying for.
When to come
November to March is the northern winter and Bali's wetter season, and it is the right window for a test. You escape the cold at home, and you see the island in its least flattering months, which is exactly what a test is for. If the wet season is fine, the dry season will be easy. July and August are peak season, crowded and pricier; they are a poor test of ordinary life.
What to rent for a test
A whole home, furnished and managed, on one monthly tenancy agreement. Not a resort room (you will never learn what living here is like) and not a string of short holiday lets (you will spend the six months moving). The agreement should allow you to extend month by month to a year if the island earns it.
Choose it by the ordinary day rather than the view: how far to the clinic and the supermarket, whether there is a bedroom on the ground floor, whether there is a room for visitors, and whether the lane is quiet at night. What to actually test
Healthcare: register with a clinic in the first fortnight and use it once for something small, so you know how it works before you need it. Money: run your real budget, not a holiday one, for at least three months. Community: find one regular thing, a class, a market, a beach walk, where you see the same faces. Family: count the video calls that felt like enough and the ones that did not. Heat and rain: notice how you sleep in February.
Write the answers down in month four. Month five is for deciding; month six is for either extending the lease or going home with a clear head and no regrets. Both are good outcomes.
If you decide to stay
The lease extends; the home does not change. The visa track starts: for most retirees that is the one-year retirement stay permit, for which a villa lease is accepted as proof of accommodation.
