Retirees who settle well in Bali tend to do three things: they test the island for six months before committing, they choose a quiet area with clinics in reach rather than the liveliest one, and they rent a whole home rather than a room in a resort. The west coast around Seseh, Munggu and Pererenan fits that pattern: quiet lanes and rice fields, Canggu's clinics and supermarkets ten to fifteen minutes away, and a growing community of people who came for a season and stayed.
Why the quiet west coast rather than Canggu
Canggu is where the noise is: the cafes, the traffic, the scooters at midnight. It is wonderful for a week and wearing for a year. Ten minutes west the coast changes character. Pererenan, then Seseh and Munggu, are villages with black-sand beaches, rice fields and a slower day, close enough to use everything Canggu offers without living inside it.
For a longer stay that trade matters more than any other. You want the bakery and the pharmacy near, the traffic far, and a lane where you know the neighbours. That is what the west-coast pocket is, and it is why so many of the people who live here full time are past the backpacking years.
Healthcare, honestly
This is the question retirees ask first, and rightly. From Seseh and Munggu the nearest emergency clinics are Canggu Medical in Pererenan, about 11 minutes by car, and Siloam Medika in Canggu, about 13 minutes. A pharmacy is about 3 minutes away. Siloam Hospital is 35 to 50 minutes depending on traffic. Those are area figures measured by car at afternoon pickup, so treat them as approximate.
Bali also now has an international hospital: Bali International Hospital in Sanur opened in June 2025, allowing foreign specialists to practise and stocking medicines that used to mean a flight to Singapore. It is on the other side of the island, so it is a planned appointment rather than an emergency stop, but its existence changes the calculation for many people who used to rule Bali out on healthcare alone.
The honest summary: day-to-day and urgent care is close; complex treatment is a longer drive or a short flight. Good international health insurance is not optional, and it is also a condition of the retirement stay permit.
What a home needs at this stage
A whole home, not a room. A bedroom you do not have to climb to: at Core Villas each home has a garden bungalow suite at ground level as well as the upstairs bedrooms, which matters more at seventy than at forty. A guest room for the children and grandchildren who will visit, which is the reason a three or four-bedroom villa suits a couple. A pool that is yours. Quiet.
Then the practical layer: a home that arrives furnished and managed, so you are not sourcing a sofa or chasing a plumber in a language you do not speak. Maintenance, pool and gardens handled by an on-site team is the difference between living in Bali and administering a house in Bali.
Test it for six months first
The pattern that works is a six-month stay before any long commitment: long enough to live through a wet season, find your doctor, learn the roads and know whether the distance from family sits right, short enough to keep your safety net at home. Six-month test stays have become the documented way retirees try overseas living, and Bali is one of the most common places to do it.
A monthly residence is built for exactly this. One tenancy agreement at a monthly rate, a whole furnished home, and the freedom to extend to a year if the island earns it. Core Villas offers its homes from one month to a year for precisely that reason. Our guide to the six-month test stay covers how to structure it.
The visa, in one paragraph
Renting a home in Bali needs no visa at all; a foreign individual can hold a lease. Staying is the separate track. Practitioners report three routes as of 2026: a retirement stay permit for people over 55 (some nationalities benchmarked at 60), renewable yearly, with proof of pension income, accommodation and health insurance; a Second Home visa of five or ten years with no age requirement but a large state-bank deposit; and multiple-entry visit visas of 60 days per entry for the part-year option. Our retirement visa guide sets out each one plainly. Requirements move often and depend on the office and the agent, so route the paperwork through a licensed immigration agent rather than a forum thread.
What Core Villas is for retirees
Seventeen private-pool villas in one quiet compound at Seseh, Munggu, ten of them offered for monthly and long-term rent from Q3 2027. Three and four-bedroom homes with a ground-floor garden suite, fully furnished, with maintenance, pool and gardens run by the on-site team. Take one for six months to test the island, or for a year with the option to renew. The waitlist notes your dates and the home you want; nothing is charged until there is a lease to sign.
